Lavelle Brian Hawthorne
Services for Lavelle Brian Hawthorne will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church, Alexandria with Dr. David Brooks and Reverend Daniel Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be in Alexandria Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Hixson Brothers, Alexandria.
Visitation will be Tuesday at Hixson Brothers, Alexandria from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
Mr. Hawthorne, 76, of Alexandria passed away Monday, July 12, 2010 at Matthews Memorial.
Lavelle was born in LaSalle Parish on June 24, 1934, the oldest son of Edward A. and Mary Barron Hawthorne. He attended schools in LaSalle and Rapides Parish. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Accounting from Louisiana College in 1960 after serving in the U. S. Marine Corp.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Educational Building Planning Committee when Calvary moved to their Jackson Street location, where he was instrumental in building the temporary education buildings. He and his son, Brian, with other members of Calvary traveled to Reno, Nevada to help build Steamboat Baptist Church. He was also involved in Mexico Indian Training Mission constructing a dormitory building and flying Dr. Tom Robinson and his medical team to Mexico.
Lavelle was an accomplished builder, gifted with mechanical abilities, and was self taught in computer programming. After retirement from the Department of Labor as a Financial and Compliance Auditor, he spent most of his time enjoying his favorite hobby, computers, and sharing his passion with family and friends. He was an avid reader, and also enjoyed golfing, flying his airplane, and fishing in Mexico with friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary B. Hawthorne and brother, Gary Lane Hawthorne.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Bettye Jean Grant Hawthorne, his three children, Colleen Hawthorne McCalmont (Jim), Brian Keith Hawthorne (Melanie), and Bradley Grant Hawthorne and five grandchildren, James Addison McCalmont, IV (Payton), Thomas Grant McCalmont, Lauren Elizabeth McCalmont, John Chandler Hawthorne, and Christopher McCrae Hawthorne. His brothers, Sherwood Hawthorne (Wanda), Jimmy Hawthorne, Reverend Daniel Hawthorne (Meda), and sisters, Margie Robertson and Faye Hood (Jimmie), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are his sons and four grandsons, honorary pallbearers include Charles Allen, Will Cooper, Ben Gray, Wiley Heard, Billy Hickman, Randall Loeffler, Richard McGraw, William McGraw, Bill Morris, Guy Porto, Clarence Reynolds, Bobby Reynolds, Dr. Tom Robinson, Aubrey Sanders, Robert Schmidt, Tommy Smith, Monroe Thompson, Wayne Wilkerson and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family would like memorials to be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 5711 Jackson Street, Alexandria, LA 71301.
