Leland LEE

Mr. Leland Lee, 83, of Dunn died Thursday morning at Good Hope Hospital. He was born September 16, 1918 to Elder Xure and Canzada Lee, at the home place in Sampson County, 7 miles east of Dunn, half way between Dunn and Newton Grove. His father served two Primitive Baptist Churches as minister for more than 30 years. He married the former Louise McCullen from McCullen's Crossroads, near Clinton, on June 15, 1945. He attended Plain View School, served the Postal Service at Fort Bragg as a civilian for 3 years and also, worked there while serving in the U.S. Army for two years. He was a Vocational Instructor for G.I. Farm Training Programs for 11 years, and then worked with Bradley and Baker Nitrogen Firm for a year. He was a tobacco warehouseman at Lee's Planters Warehouse of Dunn, Inc. for 30 years and president of the Dunn Tobacco Board of Trade for 10 years. He was very active in community and church affairs. He was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Mason for 47 years, including being a Past Master of Mingo Lodge #206, a member of York Rite, Scottish Rite Bodies of Wilmington, a member of the Sudan Temple of New Bern, and a member of the Mingo Chapter #336 Order of the Eastern Star for 31 years. He served the Dunn Production Credit Association for 33 years and was chairman of the Board of Directors for 14 years. He served three terms as Director of the Dunn Area Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the American Legion for 38 years, a member of the Moose Lodge, the Ruritan Club and Woodman of the World. He joined the Rotary Club of Dunn, August 16, 1966 and maintained 100% attendance for 18 of the 33 years as a member. He was president during 1977 and 1978. He became a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International on September 16, 1980.

A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at Skinner Funeral Home by Rev. Danny Powell. Burial will follow in Lee-Johnson Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

He is survived by his wife, Louise Lee of Dunn, two daughters, Sylvia Spies and husband John of Dunn, Mattie Lou West and husband Paul of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Zada McLamb and husband Mack, Chad Register and wife Cindy, Lance Register and wife Terra Beth, Troy Register; two step grandchildren, Walter and Linda West; six great grandchildren, Zachary and Ariel McLamb, Autumn, Cole, Jacob and Jaron Register.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Skinner Funeral Home. Flowers are welcome or memorial may be made to Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, c/o Edna Norman, 190 Sampson Rd., Dunn, NC 28334.
