L.K. Bird

CARTHAGE -- Funeral services for L. K. ``Buddy'' Bird, 91, of Carthage will be 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at First United Methodist Church of Carthage with Dr. Gary Fitzgerald and the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home.

Mr. Bird died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006 in Carthage. Lennox Keith ``Buddy'' Bird was born Aug. 15, 1914, in Carthage to William Leo and Checkie McDaniel Bird, a pioneer family of Panola County. In his youth, Mr. Bird was an outstanding baseball and softball player and was captain of the Sun Oil Team. He served a number of years as president of the Fredericksburg Hunting Club where he had been a member since 1951. Mr. Bird was a chief mechanic for Sun Oil Company for 45 years. He married Frances Gilliland on Jan. 28, 1938. He was a member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521 A.F. & A.M. where he received his 50 year pin in 1995 and was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Carthage. In 1993, he was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for his work as Chairman of Worship and Head Usher by the Rev. Earl Cantrell.

Mr. Bird is survived two grandsons and three great-grandchildren; sister, Coila Crawford of Carthage; other relatives and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Jason Bird, Mitch Bird, Guy Bunyard, Raphael Crawford Jr., Robert Davis, Rowland Duckworth and Gerald Fields.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
