Mr. Leon Harlan Baker
1918-2008

Funeral service for Mr. Leon Harlan Baker, 90, of Alexander City, will be Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church Alexander City. Dr. Gerald Hallmark and Dr. Skip Lowery will officiate. Mr. Baker will lie instate at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Hillview Memorial Park with veteran's honors provided by the Alexander City Veteran's Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Radney Funeral Home.

Mr. Baker passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Russell Medical Center. He was born on April 11, 1918 in Tallapoosa County to James Elmore Baker and Savannah Vivian Gunn Baker. He was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church Alexander City, where he was the official greeter and was superintendent of the City of Alexander City Public Works until his retirement. Mr. Baker was a member of the Lion's Club, served on the Alex City City Council for four years and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He was a volunteer for Campfire and the Red Cross and loved to eat and help others.

He is survived by his wife of sixty eight years, Sybil Virginia Bailey Baker of Alexander City; sons, David Wayne Baker and Johnny Earl Baker, both of Alexander City; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Jewel McDonald and brother, Thomas Jefferson Baker.
