Col. Leonard Milton Orman

Col. Leonard Milton Orman departed this life to be with our Lord on Dec. 5, 1998. Beloved husband of Doris M. - father of beloved son, Jeffrey G. (Sharon)- brother, Melvin Leon (Mary) of Raymond, Miss.- and nieces, Brenda Nell (Ed) Massimo and Kay Lynn (George) Beemon.

Born in Jackson, Miss., on May 31, 1917. Graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Attended Harvard and M.I.T. for radar school. Wrote two books and more than 75 scientific articles- installed the first radar on Diamond Head, Hawaii. During WWII he took an artillery battalion to Guam, returned to Research and Development at the Pentagon, then attended Columbia University, N.Y., in preparation for teaching at the U.S. Military Academy. Received a master's degree in electronics at the University of Pennsylvania, was Chief of Army office at Patrick AFB, Cape Canaveral, Fla., and worked with Wernher Von Braun on the launch of the first U.S. satellite, Explorer I. Attended Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., prior to his service in Korea. After working with the Under Secretary of the Army, he became the first Chief of the Research Office for the Armed Services for Latin America headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Completed a 36-year military career as Chief of U.S. Army Weapons Command, Rock Island, Ill.

After retirement the family moved to Pueblo, where Colonel Orman taught mathematics at the University of Southern Colorado. He was a member of the American Math Association, Colorado Association of Teachers of Math, Colo-Wyo Academy of Science, Kappa Delta Pi. Was in the 1978-1979 Who's Who in the West, and retired as Professor Emeritus. One of a select group to have read all 100 of The Great Books. Was active as elder of the First Presbyterian Church, President of the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra, Charter member of the Retired Officers Association in Pueblo, longtime member of the Pueblo Country Club. to be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at First Presbyterian Church, 220 W. 10th, Pueblo, Colo.
