Lessie Smith McCarty

Mrs. McCarty was born May 30, 1914 in Copiah County to the Rev. George Smith and Nina Smith. She graduated from Sandersville High School in 1933.

Mrs. McCarty was a resident of the Erata Community for 67 years and a longtime member of Erata Presbyterian Church and later United Presbyterian Church in Sandersville. She was active in Women of the Church. She is currently a member of First Trinity Presbyterian Church

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Home Demonstration Club

When she was young, she was a seamstress at Reliance Manufacturing Company. She was employed by the Jones County Health Department for many years until her retirement in 1977.

She has lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, for the past 9 years due to declining health.

She died at Christian Health Center in Hopkinsville from the complications of aging.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh McCarty in 1992 and an infant daughter, Evelyn Gay McCarty in 1938.

She is survived by her sons, Davis McCarty and his wife Sandra of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Vern McCarty of Atlanta, Ga., and her daughter, Vickie McCarty Sisk and her husband Marion of Hopkinsville, Ky.; her grandchildren Rick McCarty (Cissy) of Madison, Patrick McCarty (Casey) of Birmingham, Ala., Joseph Sisk (Lisa) of Hopkinsville, Ky., Nina Sisk Cantrell (Oliver) of New York City and one step-granddaughter Crystal Sisk of Baltimore, Md. She has 6 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sisters Libba Matthews, Clinton, Annette Yarbrough, Meridian, Aileene Thompson, Laurel, Martha Jo Hayes (Jim), Hattiesburg, and her brothers, Lewis Smith, Pascagoula and George Smith (Joyce), Laurel.

The funeral will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. at First Trinity Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the Erata Cemetery. Rev. John Dudley will officiate. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Visitation will be at Memory Chapel on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Mark Matthews, Keith Matthews, Jimmy Kline, Neil Yarbrough, Hal Yarbrough, Bryan Hayes and Alan Smith

In Lieu of Flowers memorial made be made to Magnolia Speech School for the Deaf in Clinton and Erata Cemetery.
