Lillian Cross Stegall
1922 - 2007

Lillian Cross Stegall, 84, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007.

Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Chapel. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in her honor to the American Heart Association or the Senior Adult Ministry of Connell Baptist Church.

Lillian grew up in the small town of Megargel, where she graduated from high school and was president of her high school senior class. Her college studies took place at North Texas State University and she graduated in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree. This was no small feat, considering her economic resources and the relatively small number of women who were fortunate enough to pursue higher education at that time. Lillian was a career-long teacher in the Fort Worth ISD. She taught at Mary Louise Phillips Elementary, Brooklyn Heights Elementary and Benbrook Elementary. She believed in the uplifting power of education and taught both formally and informally at every opportunity. Lillian was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority throughout her career and even after her retirement in 1977. She was a devoted Christian, serving consistently at Connell Baptist Church since 1951. She taught many ages of Sunday school and actively participated in vacation Bible school. She also sang in the church choir. In recent years she participated in a senior choir by singing and accompanying that group on the piano. Lillian was one of the very first open-heart surgery patients in the United States. In 1956, she had surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., to correct a congenital heart defect. She proved that patients could thrive following such a problem by living the next 51 years to the fullest.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford C. Stegall, a prominent Fort Worth real estate attorney, who died in 1979.

Survivors: Sons and their spouses, John Stegall and wife, Patricia, of Fort Worth and Randy Stegall and wife, Priscilla, of Keller; grandchildren, Kelley Myers and her husband, James, Kara Stegall and Cliff Stegall, all of Fort Worth; great-grandson, Liam Meyers; and stepgrandchildren, Trey and Emily Walton.
