Lloyd Hawthorne

Lloyd Hawthorne, age 78, of Pineville, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 in Rapides Regional Medical Center.

Lloyd Hawthorne was a nationally renowned artist who was known for his commercial art and paintings of native landscapes and historical subjects. His interest in detail was clearly demonstrated through many of his artworks using oil, watercolor, and acrylic paints. He attended Louisiana College and received degrees in Psychology and Art. He also took postgraduate work in Art at Louisiana State University. Mr. Hawthorne was a Navy veteran of World War II who worked with medical illustrating and publication work. He was then employed by Central Louisiana Electric Company where he dealt mostly with art in company publications many nationally recognized. He was commissioned to do cover illustrations for na-tional publications such as The Humber Way published by Exxon and The Liner published by Interstate Oil Pipeline Company. He also designed publications for the Louisiana Baptist Convention. Mr. Hawthorne was the original designer of the City of Pineville flag. He was the commissioned artist who painted the portraits of the Louisiana College Presidents, still displayed in the campus library. He also taught Art at Louisiana College. Currently, his art is displayed at the Louisiana Governor's Mansion, the R.W. Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport, Northwestern State University, and the Alexandria Museum of Art. His works appear in private collections of art patrons and businesses throughout the United States. A few of his nationally known art-works include: Captain Shreve Clearing the Great Raft >From the Red River, The Old Sanders Place, Autumn on the Bayou, Steamboat 'Round the Bend, Red River, and The Founding of Natchitoches.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Peachlin and Etta Corley Hawthorne brothers, Alvin Hawthorne, J.P. Hawthorne, and Wallace Hawthorne.

Survivors include two brothers, Andrew Hawthorne and his wife, Betty and Bobby Ray Hawthorne and his wife, Marie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Private memorial and burial services will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made in Mr. Hawthorne's name to the American Heart Association, 2304 MacArthur Dr., Alexandria, La. 71303. Arrangements are under the direction of Hixson Brothers of Alexandria.
