Smith Constable Shot To Death
LORENA, Miss. (AP) -- Smith County constable Lon Arender, 65, was shot to death today and his brother-in-law was charged with murder.
Sheriff Roy Gardner said the brother-in-law, Winston Boykin, 48, surrendered to county jailer A. T. Harris shortly after the shooting.
Gardner described the slaying:
Arender was en route to the home of Ed Hill, Boykin's neighbor, to hire him for spring plowing.
As Arender crawled through a fence alongside Boykin's house, Boykin shot him with a shotgun and fled into the woods.
James Henry Shirley, another neighbor, told officers he drove Boykin to Raleigh to surrender at the jail.
Gardner said neighbors told him Boykin and Arender had quarreled frequently while Boykin was working as a sharecropper on the Arender farm.
The grand jury meets in three weeks. Boykin was held without bond.
