Lory L. Smith, Jr.
DALLAS, TX -- A memorial service for Lory L. Smith, Jr. will be held at- Frost Chapel of The First Baptist Church of Shreveport on May 12, 2007 at 1:00 PM. The service will be delivered by John Henson, Associate Pastor. Friends are invited to the church parlor following the service.
Mr. Smith was born in Shreveport on March 9, 1925. He served in the US Navy with tours to the Atlantic and Mediterranean from 1943 to 1945. He attended Centenary College and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Architecture. He was employed with Walker and Walker Architects from 1951 to 1953. He then became a partner with Charles Sevier Barr in Barr & Smith Architects in January 1953 until December 1987 when he joined the Caddo Parish School Board as Projects Manager. For the past two years Mr. Smith had lived close to his son, Lane Smith, in Dallas Texas.
During his 34 years of practicing architecture, Mr. Smith designed many landmark office buildings, schools, churches, shopping centers and medical plazas in the Shreveport area including: 1. Cherokee Park Elementary School 2. The WW Grainger Building 3. St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church 4. Madison Park Shopping Center 5. Fairfield Medical Plaza
He was a member of the NCARB, the Louisiana Architects Associates, and President of the Shreveport chapter of the AIA. He was appointed to the State of Louisiana Architectural Licensing Board and served for six years. Mr. Smith served as President of the Construction Specialist Institute (CSI) and received the CSI National Award for attracting the most new members. He was the architect as well as a charter member of East Ridge Country Club.
Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Charlee Smith (currently Racheal Mathews), who lives in Branson, MO and a son, Lane Smith, living in Dallas. He is also survived by a granddaughter by Lane, Kati Lane Smith, and two grandsons by Charlee, Nick and Ian Metz.
His family and friends will remember him as a faithful and caring man who was an optimist, trusting there is a positive side to everything. He was always fun to be with and will be greatly missed.
