Louis Epplett

The funeral will be May 19 for Louis ``Bud'' Edward Epplett of Eugene who died May 16 of age-related causes. He was 89.

Epplett was born Oct. 3, 1915, in Tillamook to George and Irene Cochran Stiverson. He married Juanita Tarver Peak in December 1945. She died in 1978. He married Barbara Hansen in Eugene in 1990.

He grew up in Cloverdale and Portland. At 17, he joined the Oregon National Guard and worked various jobs before enrolling at Oregon State University the following year where he was an athlete and worked his way through college. He was also inducted into three honor societies.

After graduation from OSU in 1940, his Guard unit, the 41st Division, was called to active duty. He spent three years in the South Pacific during World War II, and his final year in Louisiana.

After the war he studied at the University of Oregon School of Dentistry. He taught for one year before being recalled with the Air Force during the Korean War in 1951.

Two years later he established a dental practice in Eugene. He served as president of the Lane County Dental Society, was president of the Eugene Executives Association and president of the Eugene Lions Club. He was elected to the International College of Dentists in 1982.

He enjoyed flying and fishing and especially liked playing basketball at the YMCA.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Richard of Eugene; two daughters, Pat Abel of Eugene and Lisa of Escondido, Calif.; two stepchildren, Nancy Latour and Michael Possman; a sister, Doris Philipp of Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Thursday's service will be at 2 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Eugene. Burial will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Rest-Haven Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the YMCA in Eugene.
