DAWSON, LOYD E.

Horn Lake, Mississippi -- Loyd E. Dawson, 84, died Friday, August 5, 2011 at Landmark of Desoto care facility after an extended illness. Forest Hill South Funeral Home on Holmes Road, Memphis is handling arrangements with visitation Sunday, August 7, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel with interment in the adjoining cemetery to follow.

Mr. Dawson was born January 31, 1927 in Amite County, Mississippi to Luther and Allie Bateman Dawson. He was one of thirteen siblings. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 and was stationed in Germany. In 1950, he married Reta B. Freeman in Amite County. In 1952, he moved to Memphis and retired in 1979 from Armour and Company after 22 years. In 1992, he also retired from Shulton Inc. as a maintenance mechanic. He was a member of Cornerstone Church, Southaven, MS.

Mr. Dawson is survived by his wife of 61 years Reta, three sons, Michael (Peggy) of Horn Lake, MS, Tim (Peggy) of Madison, MS, Eric of Milwaukee, WI, and daughter Kay (Perry) Horner of Cleveland, TN, 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Florence Byrd, of Petal, MS and one brother, Nelson Dawson, of Liberty, MS. He is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
