Machel O. Mayes, Winn PJ Member, Fatally Stricken

Machel O. Mayes, 46 year old Winn Parish Police Juror, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Saturday, March 5. He was stricken at his home and died enroute to a Winnfield hospital.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at Sikes Baptist Church with Rev. Carter Hall, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Hebron Cemetery under direction of Southern Funeral Home.

Mayes was born at Sikes, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Mayes. He was a member of the Sikes Baptist Church and of the Rosemary Lodge No. 278, F. & A. M. at Hebron. He was elected to the Winn Parish Police Jury in 1956, representing Ward Three, and would have completed his first term in May of this year. He lost his bid for re-election in the recent Democratic primaries to Crosby Adams, a former member of the PJ from Ward Three.

The Ward representative was employed in Winnfield auto salesman for several years and at the time of his death was traveling for U. B. Carpenter's Wholesale of Winnfield.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bertha Mayes, and a daughter, Mrs. Elmara [sic Elnora] Scroggins, both of Sikes; one brother, S. D. Mayes of Delhi; two sisters, Mrs. H. P. Tharpe of Delhi, and Mrs. Harold Brown of Alexandria.

Active pallbearers were Fred Tucker, Lee Tucker, Ronnie Tucker, Nelson Young, Ray Walker, James Simmons, Jerry McCarty.

Masonic graveside services were conducted by members from Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 of Winnfield and the Rosemary Lodge No. 278 at Hebron.
