Mamie Sharman Hammons

Mamie Sharman Hammons passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Longview. Mrs. Hammons was born in Dodson, La., on Oct. 21, 1911, the daughter of William Robert Sharman Jr. and Ettie Rosalia Jones Sharman.

As a student at Louisiana Tech University, she met Ottice Ray Hammons from Colfax, La. They were married July 18, 1931, in Ruston. The couple moved to Longview, where he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Together they reared three daughters and one son. Mrs. Hammons taught fourth grade at Main Ward, South Ward and Valley View elementary schools. The family attended First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed genealogical research.

Mrs. Hammons was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years and two daughters, Gerry Bennett and Jackie Nix. She is survived by one sister, Myrtis Lester of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Cynthia Havins of Fair Oaks Ranch and a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Laurie Hammons of Houston. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Shelley Turner and her husband, Fred, of Lake Tyler; Natale Perry and her husband, Brian, of Bedford; Brenda Trammel and her husband, Jeff; Sandra Mejia and her husband, Ivan, of Houston; and Katherine Hammons and Allison Hammons, both of Houston. Other survivors include her great-grandchildren, David Knight of Denton and Joshua Mejia and Brittany Mejia, both of Houston, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in Memory Park Cemetery, directed by Rader Funeral Home of Longview, 1617 Judson Road. Pastor Harry L. Lucenary will officiate.

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, Aug. 10, at the funeral home.
