M. L. Mecom Dies Thursday

Funeral services for Mr. M. L. Mecom, 74, prominent Columbia merchant who died suddenly about 5:30 p.m., Thursday of last week, were held Saturday at 10 a.m., at the Columbia Methodist church. Rev. W. R. Wendt, pastor, officiated, assisted by Dr. Guy F. Winstead, and Rev. J. D. Kitchingham.

The sudden death of Mr. Mecom was a shock to his many friends of Columbia and Caldwell Parish, since he was apparently in good health for a man of his years.

Mr. Mecom had been in business in Columbia as a dry goods retailer since 1932. Previous to entering the mercantile business, Mr. Mecom was the Clerk of Court of Caldwell Parish for 32 years, a record without equal elsewhere in Louisiana.

A member of the Columbia Methodist church, Mr. Mecom was a generous supporter of religious activities, and was always ready to lend his moral and financial support to any move which might bring closer to God the hearts of those who might be influenced by the manifestation of the spirit of brotherly love.

Survivors are two daughters: Mrs. Guy Alford, Alexandria; Mrs. Ralph Phillips, Alexandria; one son, W. H. Mecom, Baton Rouge; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Gregory, Columbia; Mrs. Walter Culpepper, Monroe. Brothers surviving are six: Dr. Virgil Mecom and Dr. W. A. Mecom, Wisner; Dr. F. H. Mecom, Clarks; J. I. Mecom, Spur, Texas; Harry S. Mecom and Philip H. Mecom, of Shreveport; and three grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were Clark Hester, Jack Gregory, A. D. Bridger, and Mack Elliott. Honorary: J. H. McQuerry, Dr. D. O. Sherman, L. C. Nunn, P. M. Fisher, Allison Warner, and Dr. L. R. Adams Sr.
