Mary Etta Jackman
MIAMI, Okla. -- Mary Etta Jackman, former resident of Ponca City, died 3:10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at the Integris Baptist Regional Health Center after an illness. She was 96.
Mrs. Jackman was born Jan. 18, 1908, in Coal Country in Oklahoma, the daughter of Richard Ed and Jennie McCarthy [sic McCarty] Cox. Mrs. Jackman began her teaching career at the age of 17 and taught for 35 years, moving to Miami from Sapulpa in 1952. She taught at several Miami public schools and served as principal at Rockdale Elementary in Miami until retirement in 1973. She had also taught school in Sapulpa, Ponca City, and Coalgate.
Mrs. Jackman was a member of the National Education Association, the Oklahoma Educational Association, the Kappa Kappa Iota and Delta Kappa Gamma sororities, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Southwestern Bell Bellettes (retirement sorority) and past president of Genealogical Society in Miami. She has written two books on genealogy. She traveled extensively, going around the world twice, and had visited 40 countries and every state in the union. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Miami.
She married William H. ``Bill'' Jackman in March of 1936 in Coalgate; he preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1983, in Miami.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Jackman of Sacramento, Calif., and Bob Jackman of Tulsa; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at First Christian Church chapel, 2424 N. Main Street in Miami, with the Rev. Leon Weece officiating. Burial will follow in the GAR Cemetery under the direction of the Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home of Miami.
Casket bearers will be Kyle Jackman, Ty Jackman, Jim Cox, Elaine Merritt, Lisa Jackman Brauner and Peggy Jackman. All current and former teachers will sit together at the services.
