Mary Gertrude Alwell

Ferriday -- Services for Mary Gertrude Alwell, 75, who died Saturday, April 8, 2006, in Ferriday will be at 2 p.m. today at the Comer Funeral Home, Ferriday, with the Rev. Gordon Finley officiating.

Burial will follow in Peace Cemetery in Larto, La., under the direction of Comer Funeral Home.

Mrs. Alwell was born Nov. 18, 1930, in Natchez, the daughter of Walter A. and Agnes M. Slover.

Mrs. Alwell was a life-long resident of Ferriday and of the Baptist faith. She was the clerk for Western Union at the Ferriday Drug Store. She was a member of the American Breast Cancer Association.

She was preceded in death by her father; a daughter, Sherrie Littleton; and a sister, Thoma Jennings.

She is survived by her husband, Larson Alwell of Ferriday; a son, Roy Powell of Ferriday; two daughters, Barbara Pritchard of Denham Springs, La., and Patricia Metcalf of Monterey; her mother, Agnes Herron of Jonesville; her brother, Freddie Slover of Natchez; two sisters, Frances Blalack of Waterproof and Evelyn Stigall of Vidalia; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Reuben Metcalf, Adrian Metcalf, Henry Metcalf, Greg Stockstill, Butch Stocksill and Acuff Evans.
