M. J. ``Son'' Batey, Jr.
(November 26, 1932 - October 19, 2009)

Funeral services for M. J. ``Son'' Batey, Jr. 76 of Wisner will be at 2 PM Wednesday, October 21, 2009 in First Baptist Church in Wisner with Rev. Thomas Peoples officiating. Interment will follow in Oakley Cemetery under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro.

He was born to Matthew Julian and Ethel Carmen McCarty Batey on November 26, 1932 in Wisner and passed from this life Monday, October 19, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. Batey was a member of First Baptist Church in Wisner, where he served as deacon and also taught a Sunday school class at Marianna Nursing Home. He was a member of Gideon's International. He was a graduate of Wisner High School and Northwestern State University. He received his +30 at LA Tech University and his masters in education from Mississippi College. Mr. Batey began his career in education at St,. Amant Elementary School in Baton Rogue, but moved back to Franklin Parish in 1961, and was teacher and coach at Wisner Elementary School. He served as principal at Winnsboro Lower Elementary School and then at Wisner Jr. High School. He was appointed as administrator of NLU Franklin and retired from education in 1989.

During ``Son's'' retirement, he doted on his loving family and found time to enjoy his favorite pastimes, which included fishing, lawn mowing, ``piddlin'' with small engines and his old truck, and remained a devoted LSU fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnn Ezell Batey, sister Fay Rollins, brother Robert Earl Batey.

He leaves behind his wife Joyce Borum Batey; three children and spouses Laura Batey and Tommy McFarland, Michael Matthew and Danielle Dufrene Batey, and Anna Carol Batey all of West Monroe; sister Sandy Batey Brister and husband Mark of Monroe, brother Kenneth Ray Batey of Sicily Island; six grandchildren Elizabeth, Mary Kate, and Amanda McFarland, Kade and Cameron Batey, and Julian Michael Batey.

Pallbearers will be Alan Borum, Charles Borum, Nathan Calhoun, Marc McCarty, Trey Kiper, J. T. Tims, Jesse Young and Ray Young. Deacons of First Baptist Church in Wisner will serve as honorary pallbearers.
