Merle Glenwell Prince King

GREENWOOD, LA -- Mrs. Glenwell King, age 84, of Greenwood, LA passed from this life to one of glory on Friday, August 29, 2008 at Christus Schumpert Grace Home. She was born April 28, 1924 to the late Ellis Eri and Ava Simmons Prince of Sikes, Winnfield Parish, LA. On September 9, 1948, a Prince became a King when Merle Glenwell Prince married Lt. Col. Bobby Joe King, Sr. She was his loving wife for 52 years until his death in 2000.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at Rose-Neath Southside. Officiating will be Reverend Ken Fryer, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Greenwood, and Reverend Joe Bob Alexander. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Monday, September 1, 2008 at Rose-Neath Southside.

Mrs. King was a gifted homemaker whose life was filled with the love of family and friends. She was a creative cook who allowed no one to leave her home hungry. Glen reveled in the antics of her dogs and cats. She had a gentle spirit, a great sense of humor and loved to share wonderful stories of the memorable times of her life. When faced with the loss of her husband 8 years ago she met the challenge with grace and determination setting a courageous example for her children and grandchildren. Mrs. King was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Greenwood for 30 years and provided valued service on several committees, especially Hospitality. She was an active member of both the Greenwood Pioneer Club and the Women's Club of Greenwood.

Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, John Carvil Prince and grandson, Eric John King.

Left to cherish her memory are daughter, Jan McKinnon and husband Billy Wayne of Greenwood, LA; two sons, Bobby Joe King, Jr. and wife Donna of Kingwood, TX and John Belton King and wife Susan of Bossier City, LA. Mrs. King was beloved "Mawmaw" to grandchildren Chad Leeper and wife Eva, Jenny Leeper Beene, Brandi Davis and husband Justin, Lisa King, Adam King and wife Melanie, Sara Hirschfield and husband Kevin, and Kristi Maynor and husband Scott. She was Great-Mawmaw to Nate and Duncan Leeper, Hunter Davis and Brock Hirschfield.

She lives on in the hearts of sister-in-law, Patsy Prince; niece, Patti Prince; nephew, John C. Prince, Jr. and wife, Mona; grand-nephew, Andrew Prince along with lifelong friends, Minnie and Anis Bell.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Drs. Webb, Alexander, Lebas, Whitley and the caring staff at Christus Schumpert Hospital, Nursecare of Shreveport and Grace Home.

Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Greenwood or Grace Home.

Pallbearers will be Justin Davis, Adam King, Chad Leeper, Scott Maynor, Andrew Prince and John Prince.

Honorary pallbearers will be Anis Bell and Jim Boddie.
