Milton Harris

Milton Harris, 87, of Grandview passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008, in Dallas.

Funeral: 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Rosser Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Scott Whitson will officiate, assisted by Pastor Ben Stricklin. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Visitation: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Rosser Funeral Home.

Milton was born Jan. 28, 1921, in Overton, the youngest son of Lena McCarty and Billy Harris. He was a survivor of the New London School explosion of 1937 that killed 297 children and 13 teachers.

Milton graduated from high school in 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on Nov. 13, 1942. He spent two and a half years in the South Pacific with his B-25 light bomber group, which participated in seven major campaigns. He was honorably discharged Jan. 13, 1946.

Milton married Dorothy Odom in Overton on Aug. 3, 1947.

He was a butcher with the Worth Food Market for 30 years before retirement and then was a rancher for 25 years.

He was a member of Sand Flat Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge 908 in Fort Worth for over 50 years and a member of Moslah Shrine and rode in the motor corps.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Survivors: Wife, Dorothy Harris of Grandview; stepsons, Billy Rushing of Grandview and Charles Rushing of Paris, Texas; sister, Peggy Melton of Corpus Christi; seven nieces; and seven nephews.
