Mrs. Minnie Lee Mims Corn
Mrs. Minnie Lee Mims Corn, 86, of 525 S. Williamson Ave., Elon, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Alamance Health Care after a lengthy illness.
Minnie Lee Corn's lengthy and rewarding nursing career provided her with many varied experiences. She graduated from nursing in 1936 in Mississippi and went on to Memphis, Tennessee where she graduated as a nurse anesthetist and became the first qualified nurse anesthetist in her hospital.
Later while living in Nevada with her young children and husband, she nursed and cared for polio victims confined to iron lungs while they were transported by Army planes to Reno, Nevada for further treatment. Again, after moving to South Florida, she was excited and proud to have participated in the administration of the first Salk vaccine for polio to the local community.
Her career took her in many directions and to many places which included: being a school nurse at Delta State Teacher' College in Mississippi, an elementary school nurse in Nevada, a nurse anesthetist working in OR, a private duty nurse, a psychiatric nurse in mental health, and finally retiring as a psychiatric charge nurse from North Miami General Hospital.
In addition to her long and distinguished nursing career and raising her family, she was an active church participant, and a wonderful role model to many. May this beloved and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother rest now and forever.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Laura Pennington of Graham and Mrs. Mary Ann Swanner of Falls Church, Va.; a son, Mr. Homer Y. Corn Jr. of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Mr. John Mims of Xenia, Ohio; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one stepgranddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Homer Yates Corn Sr.; her mother, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Clark Mims; her father, Mr. George Washington Mims; and 12 brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at St. Pauls United Methodist Church by the Rev. Richard Stanley, pastor. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery.
