Funeral today for Mitchell C. Cope

Services for Mitchell C. Cope, a retired captain of the University Park Fire Department, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elmwood United Methodist Church in Oak Cliff.

Mr. Cope, 80, who worked nearly 40 years for the city, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday at his Oak Cliff home.

The St. Louis native moved to Dallas as a young boy and graduated from Sunset High School before joining the University Park Police Department in 1939.

He worked a little more than a year in the motorcycle and squad car patrol divisions before deciding he wanted to work for the Fire Department "because he had a fascination for it," said Fred Chambers, who worked with Mr. Cope as fire marshal and assistant fire chief.

Mr. Cope's daughter, Willie Pearl Boisvert, also said that he wanted to help people through his work and in his personal life.

``He enjoyed helping all people,'' she said. ``He was always one to be there for anyone who needed help.''

Mr. Cope retired in 1976.

Other survivors include a son, Mitchell E. Cope of Tampa, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
