MURLE KENDALL POST

EDINBURG -- Murle Kendall Post, long-time local agribusinessman, died Sunday morning after a short illness but a long life filled with happiness and selfless devotion to his family and friends. Murle was a friend to many and will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched.

Murle was born on a Catarina County ranch May 26th, 1914, near Asherton, Texas, and attended Sul Ross State University, wher he played on the basketball team. After graduation, he soon settled into the Edinburg area in 1933, where he became active in the produce industry.

Murle was proud to have introduced a number of young people into the produce business who are still active today. He often reflected fondly on that part of his career and up until 1998 still kept tabls on some of his former customers.

He was never far away from his roots in the cattle business, however, and made it his full-time vocation in 1965 when he purchased an interest in the Community Sales Yard livestock auction south of Edinburg, and also began feeding fat cattle. In 1973, he and his brother purchased an interest in the Community Exchange Sales Yard where he became partners with Jack Burkholder and the late Howard Lohmann.

The association continued until 1982 when he and his brother sold their interest in the enterprise. “Mr. Post,” as he was often respectfully addressed, was widely regarded as an honorable businessman of the highest caliber.

Murle continued to trade in livestock and he fed fat cattle twice a day until May of 1999 when his health failed him to the point that he could no longer perform the rigors associated with such an undertaking. He was 85 years young by then.

He actively supported the Rio Grande Valley Livestock show for decades, and sponsored many FFA and 4-H projects throughout the Valley area.

Additionally, many friends will remember Murle as a loyal supporter of Edinburg High School football and Pan American Univeristy basketball as a long-time season ticket holder of both. For many years, rarely a game was played that he was not there to support his teams.

Murle has been an active member of the First United Methodist Church congregation of Edinburg.

Murle is survived by his wife, Eva Ruth of 62 years; three daughters, Barbara Post of Edinburg, and Carole (Larry) Haldiman and Virginia (Jimmy) Nicholls, both of McAllen; a sister, Joyce Hibbetts of Edinburg; two brothers, Dr. Roy G. Post of Tucson, Ariz., and Jack Post of Whitney, Texas; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 6 p.m. at Skinner-Silva Funeral Home of Edinburg.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the First United Methodist Church in Edinburg, with the Rev. Mark Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.

The family suggests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 25, Edinburg, Texas 78540.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner-Silva Funeral Home, Edinburg.
