Oma Blalock Thornton
SULPHUR -- Funeral services for Oma Blalock Thornton, 89, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home, 2051 E. Napoleon St. The Rev. Don Walker will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery in Lake Charles.
Mrs. Thornton died Saturday, April 17, in her residence. Visitation hours will be 6-10 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Thornton was born in Winnfield on May 12, 1914, to Kindred and Ida Boyett. She graduated from Winnfield High School and attended Louisiana Women's Normal College in Monroe. She married B.S. Blalock on May 7, 1938. He died on March 24, 1971. She married Jessie Thornton on June 7, 1988. He died on Feb. 7, 1993. Mrs. Thornton was a very active charter member of the Olivet Baptist Church. She was the church pianist for 20 years. She taught special-needs children in the Calcasieu Parish School System for three years. She established and operated three beauty shops, the Korner Koffee Shop and a tax office.
Survivors include one daughter, Cathy LeBlanc of Sulphur; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.mem.com.
