Opal McCurley

Funeral services for Opal Bass McCurley, 78 of DeRidder, LA will be held at 1PM Friday January 15, 2010 at Texas Avenue Baptist Church in DeRidder. Dr. Arthur Rocket and Rev. George Glass will be officiating with burial to follow in Newlin Cemetery under the care of Hixson Funeral Home of DeRidder. Visitation will be Thursday January 14, 2010 from 5PM until 9PM at Hixson Funeral Home of DeRidder and Friday from 11AM until time of service at the Church.

Opal was the most loving and devoted Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Her hobbies were playing the piano, singing, making ceramics and helping others. For the past 11 years, she was not able to walk or talk, but she still kept her strong faith in God.

Opal was born in DeRidder, LA and played basketball for DeRidder High School. She also lived in Houston, TX for over 40 years. She was a member of Temple Oaks Baptist Church in Houston for many years. Opal sang in the choir and played piano for the Sunday school class. She also was a librarian and PE teacher for Temple Oaks Baptist School. She attended Texas Avenue Baptist Church in DeRidder.

Survivors include her husband, Robert McCurley, daughter, Karen Lavelle and son-in-law Kenneth; two grandsons, Jeremy Coffman and Nicholas Lavelle; and one sister Alta Morrow.
