Oscar James “Coonie” Slaughter
Oscar James “Coonie” Slaughter, 85, formerly of Crossville, Illinois, died Sunday, December 16, 2012, at Parkview Nursing Home in Evansville, Indiana. He was born October 10, 1927, in Provencal, Louisiana. On December 31, 1952, he married Wanda Lee (Clark) Slaughter and she preceded him death on October 2, 2006.
Coonie was a World War II Army Veteran and member of the Crossville Missionary Baptist Church. He worked most of his career in the oilfields of the Illinois Basin. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and his grandkids. He was known by his family as an extraordinarily great waffle maker.
Survivors include four daughters, Brenda McClure, Catherine (Bill) Owen, all of Carmi, IL, Doris Swan of New Bedford, MA, Ellen (Bryan) Hayward of Indianapolis, IN; son-in-law Tim Malloy of Carmi; grandchildren Micheal, Eric, Jessica, April, Clark, Deborah, Kyle, jimmy, Bryce, Danni and Billy; great-grandchildren Caty, Krissy, Aiden, William and Abby.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter Audrey Malloy; brothers Albert Slaughter, Roy Slaughter, Samuel Slaughter and Billy Jackson; sisters Lillie Boydstum [sic Boydston], Rosalie Hamm and Viola Weimar.
A private family service will be Wednesday, December 19th at 1 pm at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Burial with military rites will be in White County Memorial Gardens.
