Mr. Otis Sylvester Dunn, Jr.
May 27, 1921 - January 8, 2009

Otis S. Dunn, 87 -- a long-time resident of Mobile, died on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Mercy Medical Hospice.

He was born in Alexandria, LA on May 27, 1921 to Otis S. and Rosalie Speed Dunn. He grew up in Duncan, MS and moved to Mobile in 1955. In Mobile he was engaged for many years as an independent insurance agent, specializing in maritime-related insurance. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant with the U.S. Marine Corp. During the Korean War he reached the rank of captain with the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and two Purple Hearts. He was a long-time member of Springhill Baptist Church, where he served in several leadership positions and was elected a Lifetime Deacon.

His brother, Milton D. Dunn, preceded him in death.

Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Bishop Dunn; daughter, Robbie Lynn (Sonny) Irvine of Mobile and a son, Chuck (Edie) Dunn of New Orleans; grandchildren: Virginia Irvine (Ned) Babb of Knoxville, TN, Helen Irvine (Hugh) Milteer of Birmingham, AL, Sallie Irvine (Nick) Merchant of Mobile and Roberta Murphy Dunn of New York City; great-grandchildren: Will, Helen and Elizabeth Babb of Knoxville, TN, Tucker, Clarke and Beverley Milteer of Birmingham and Charlie, Mary Burton and Virginia Merchant.

There will be a memorial service at Springhill Baptist Church at 12 noon Monday, January 12, 2009 with the visitation at the church beginning at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the requests memorial donations be made to the Springhill Baptist Church Foundation, 2 S. McGregor Ave., Mobile, AL 36608.
