Ouida Whittington Vasey

Ouida Whittington Vasey died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at Simi Valley Hospital.

She was 84 years old. Ouida was born Oct. 20, 1919, in Smithdale, Miss., and was a graduate of Southwest Mississippi Junior College, where she earned a degree in business administration. She joined the Navy in 1942, served in the WAVES, and was stationed in Washington, D.C., working for the War Department. After taking a civil service position for the Corps of Engineers, she went on to have a 30-year career as a legal secretary. In 1948, she married Robert C. Vasey Jr. They made their home mainly in Southern California. Ouida retained a strong affection and tie to Mississippi and the folks back home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Vasey Jr.; parents, Smiley and Della Whittington; and brothers, S.B. and Billy Whittington. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Klinger; stepchildren, Robert (wife Mitzie) Vasey and Rene (husband Frank) Thorley; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; special brother-in-law, retired Rear Adm. Lloyd (wife Lilian) Vasey; and dear friend, Margo Braer. She will be deeply missed by family and friends. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers who have assisted Ouida in recent years.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Chatsworth United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chatsworth United Methodist Church, 10824 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Chatsworth, CA 91311. Arrangements are by Reardon Simi Valley Funeral Home.
