Mrs. Pennie Johnson Succumbs At 88 Years
Mrs. Pennie Lee Johnson of Smithfield died early Thursday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lillie J. Harde, with whom she made her home. Mrs. Johnson, who was 88 years of age, died following a long illness.
She was born in Johnston County. Her parents were the late Luther P. and Susan Jones Lee.
She was the widow of John J. Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church.
The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon in Hopewell Free Will Baptist Church. The Rev. Fred Powers, pastor, and the Rev. Harry Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
The body will remain at Overby Funeral Home in Smithfield until late Friday afternoon, when it will be taken to the residence at 602 North Seventh Street. The body will lie in state at the church for an hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hardee of Smithfield; six sisters, Mrs. Mary Langdon and Mrs. Ellen Austin of Route 3, Four Oaks, Mrs. Amanda Jones and Mrs. Lena Barbour of Route 1, Smithfield, Mrs. Louise Johnson of Benson, and Mrs. Josie Laneave of Raleigh; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
