Raymond “Rip” Vantroy Whittington Sr.
Mr. Raymond “Rip” Vantroy Whittington, Sr., age 68 of Atlanta, La. passed away April 10, 2014 at Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield. He was a native of Eudora Arkansas and was retired as a Major with the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.
Mr. Whittington was a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church, a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F&AM., a volunteer firefighter with Winn Parish Fire District 3 for close to 20 years and was former Police Chief of Atlanta. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran and was a radarman on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk.
Mr. Whittington was the son of the late Alva Lee Whittington, Sr. and the late Melba June Dozier Whittington. He was also preceded in death by three sisters Melba Nettles, Barbara Coalter, and Shirley Annette Whittington, two nephews Charles “Jangle” Nettles and Randy Whittington.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years Debbie Gresham Whittington, one son Raymond Vantroy “Troy” Whittington, Jr. and his wife Brittany of Natchitoches, three daughters Shirley Whittington of Angola, La., Virginia Burch of Norfork, Ar., and Tracy Stewart and her husband B. W. of Atlanta, La., eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, two brothers Alva Lee Whittington Jr. of Addis, La.,, and Terry Whittington of Natchez, Ms., and one sister Linda Edwards of Erwinville, La., He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, April 13, 2014 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Dusty Durbin, Richard Harmon, and Dr. Ray Teal officiating. Interment will follow in the Atlanta Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and also on Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until time of services at 2:30.
