Robert B. “Bob” Mayfield Jr.

CLEBURNE -- Robert B. “Bob” Mayfield Jr. was welcomed into heaven on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012. When greeted by the Lord, we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that his faith in Jesus Christ and the life he lived resulted in a hardy “well done good and faithful servant.”

Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Cleburne with private family burial at a later date. Visitation: There will be a visitation at the conclusion of Monday's celebratory service.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bob's memory to Lottie Moon Missions, IMB, 3806 Monument Ave., P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230-0767.

Bob was born May 18, 1922, in Liberty Hill. His parents, Robert Sr. and Permelia Mayfield, along with siblings, Marian Rosenbauer, and Shelley Mayfield, all preceded him in death.

Bob spent happy childhood years in Seguin. He became head of the Mayfield household at age 18 upon his father's death.

Enrolling at Texas A&M (class of '45) was one of the happiest days of his life. His education was interrupted by World War II. He served his country honorably and proudly in the European invasion. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. After the war, Bob returned to Texas A&M to complete his education by earning a degree in civil engineering and became a member of the Army Corps of Engineers and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers. Anyone spending time with Bob would soon discover how proud he was to be an Aggie. He spent many weekends visiting Belton where he dated the love of his life, Neta Sawyer, a coed at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. They married on June 19, 1949. They remained happily married until his beloved Neta's death in 2003.

While in San Antonio, Bob worked for Zachry Construction Corporation. In 1961, he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. The Mayfields attended Manor Baptist where they made lifelong friends.

In 1964, the Mayfield family moved to Cleburne which remained his home until his death. Because of his love of Cleburne he became involved in many civic and church activities. The Mayfield family joined First Baptist Church where he served as chairman of deacons, Sunday school teacher for over 40 years, and numerous positions of responsibility. Bob was the business manager of the Kimbro Clinic where he helped grow the practice into a regional health facility.

In 1975, Bob became partner with Hunter Pearson at Crosier- Pearson Funeral Home. Several years later, Bob became sole owner of the business and soon after renamed Crosier Pearson Mayfield Funeral Home. With its success, Bob opened a second funeral home, Mayfield Kiser in Burleson.

Bob left an indelible mark on the community and volunteering became an important part of his life. Several of his activities included: president, Rotary Club, District Rotarian of the Year in 1975, and Johnson County A&M Club. Bob was elected to the Cleburne City Council and served several terms. He and Neta provided endowed scholarships at Mary Hardin Baylor and Texas A&M and was a trustee at University of Mary Hardin Baylor for many years. Bob served as a member of the board of directors for the Cleburne Economic Development Foundation and many other civic organizations.

More significant than the impact he had on the city, was the impact he had on the lives he touched. He was a loving father who taught his children to love, honor and serve God. He was a playful grandfather who possessed endless energy and always made time for them. It is impossible to list all of the things he did to make us laugh, inspire us, and make us grateful for having a dad and grandfather who loved as much as he did.

Survivors: He is survived by Marsha Mayfield Lockett and husband, David, of Austin; Mary Nash Walker and husband, Steve, of Temple; and son, Robert B. Mayfield III and wife, Kim, of Burleson. Bob is also survived by six grandchildren, Jay Lockett and wife, Danna, of Piano; his favorite granddaughter, Lauren Lockett of Austin; Matthew Walker of Dolores, Colo.; Andrew Walker of Dallas; and Michael and Reece Mayfield of Burleson.
