Roy E. Bevill, Sr., Winnfield Native, Dies In Mansfield
Funeral rites for Roy E. Bevill, Sr., 68, retired Mansfield lumberman who died
Sunday morning at his home in Mansfield, were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday
at the Drewett Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. George A. Richey, pastor, of the
Mansfield First Baptist Church, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Merlin W.
Merrill, pastor of the First Methodist Church. Burial was in the Highland
Cemetery.
Mr. Bevill was born in Winnfield, the son of Caroline Amanda Jennings and
William Duane Bevill. His active business life began with the growth of the
lumber industry in North Louisiana. After spending some time in Brazil, Mr.
Bevill returned and operated sawmills throughout the area. He went to
Mansfield in 1939 from Plain Dealing and was in business there until 1943. He
was a member of the Southern Pine Association and the First Methodist Church.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Gertrude Peters Bevill; two sons, Roy E.
Bevill, Jr., and William Vernon Bevill, and one grandson, all of Mansfield;
four sisters, Mrs. Mittie B. Mathis of Shreveport, Mrs. Kate Mathis Jones of
Mooringsport, Mrs. Ruth B. Butts of Winnfield and Mrs. Ruby Hamrick of Vivian;
a brother, Guy C. Bevill of Winnfield and numerous nieces and nephews.
