ROY PHILIP COOKSTON
CORAL GABLES LAWYER SERVED ON ZONING BOARD

Memorial services for Roy Philip Cookston, a former member of the Coral Gables Planning and Zoning Board, will be held on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 DeSoto Blvd.

Mr. Cookston died Dec. 10 in Coral Gables after a heart attack. He was 67.

A native of Alexandria, La., Mr. Cookston attended Tulane University and the law school of Southern Methodist University. At the time of his death, he was still practicing law from his Coral Gables office, which he founded in the early 1970s, said his daughter, Elizabeth.

Mr. Cookston served on the Gables zoning board from 1979 to 1987. In 1984, he proposed that a stadium for the University of Miami be built in the industrial area near the Douglas Road Metrorail station. The plan, which called for the stadium to be built partly on city land and partly on private property, sparked controversy.

Mr. Cookston was also a member of the Opa-locka Preservation Board and a member of the Coral Gables Country Club.

In addition to daughter Elizabeth, Mr. Cookston is survived by wife Marilyn; sons John and Philip; mother Lois, of Alexandria; stepdaughter Jane, also of Alexandria; and stepsons Lawrence, Stephen and David.

Funeral services were held in Louisiana.
