Dr. Ruby Jean Hunter

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Dr. Ruby Jean Hunter was born in Lake Village, Arkansas on August 13, 1930, the daughter of Margaret Loree Hunter and Harvey Taylor Hunter, and passed away on April 30, 2010. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 3, 2010 followed by a reception in the church parlor. Services will be conducted by Rev. Paul Martin and Rev. Guido Verbeck.

Dr. Hunter attended Lake Village High School and University of Arkansas at Monticello. She then went to University of Arkansas School of Medicine and graduated in 1958. She completed an internship at Confederate Memorial Medical Center. While there she was selected by faculty and peers as the Intern of the Year. She had her pediatric training at the University of Arkansas Medical Center, and followed this with a one-year fellowship in hematology and genetics.

In 1963, she entered the practice of pediatrics in the Shreveport-Bossier area. She continued a successful private practice until she joined the faculty of the Louisiana State Medical Center - Shreveport with appointments in the departments of Pediatrics and Family Medicine. She was very active in the teaching program of Family Medicine for Junior and Senior medical students. Dr. Hunter was chosen by them as Outstanding Teacher on more than one occasion.

In 2000, Dr. Hunter retired and enjoyed traveling, being active in the ministries at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and raising bromeliads and orchids.

Jean is survived by her friend of forty-five years, Dr. Rozelle Hahn; her brothers, James Everett Hunter and his wife Diane; David Taylor Hunter and his wife Becky; nephews Brett Hunter and his wife Andrea, their children Tyler, Taylor, and Austin; David Walker Hunter and his wife Nell, their daughter Mary Madeline, James Taylor Hunter and nieces Kristen Hunter, Carrie Pieroni and her husband Chris, their children Landon and Logan.

The family suggests that donations be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 275 Southfield, Shreveport, LA 71105, Suttons Children's Hospital, or the charity of donor's choice.
