Rufus R. Newman

Rufus Ralph Newman, 80, a lifelong resident of Gillsburg, died Sept. 10, 1992, at West Park Hospital in Hammond, La.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Gillsburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul Pearson officiating. Burial was in Gillsburg Cemetery.

Hartman Funeral Home of McComb was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Newman was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Amite County. He was the son of the late Elijah Howell Newman and Druscilla Harrell Newman.

He was a retired dairy farmer and an active member of Gillsburg Baptist Church.

He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Terrell Newman; one daughter, Northan Newman Iasigi; nine brothers, Gordon Newman, Homer Newman, Hollis Newman, Herman Newman, Price Newman, Evell Newman, Charlie Newman, Fleet Newman and Dempsey Newman Sr.; two sisters, Cassie Newman Easley, Ruby Newman Poole; and two infant sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Fleeta Newman Williams of Gillsburg; one son-in-law, Lamar Williams of Gillsburg; one sister, Argie Newman Ivy of Port Arthur, Texas; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Dempsey Newman Jr., Bill Iasigi, Mel Iasigi, Bobby Williams, James Turner and Gary Saxton.
