*The 1910 census for Grant Parish, LA (enumerated May 1910) lists the wife of S. C. EMMONS as S. A. Emmons, age 46, married once 29 years earlier. She is listed as having had nine children with seven still living. Her place of birth and that of her parents is listed as LA. These dates suggest that she was born about 1863 and that she was married about 1881. Tax lists show that Shadric C. EMMONS was living in Winn Parish, LA in 1881 and 1882, which implies that he was married there. (He was listed as single in the 1880 census for Winn Parish, at which time he was residing in the household of his father.) His wife's tombstone lists her as Sara Ann Emmons, b. 17 DEC 1866, d. 29 JAN 1916. Thus, this record disagrees with the date of birth implied by the 1910 census. The death certificate for their daughter, Kate Alifair EMMONS, lists her mother's maiden name as Sarah Ann KARNELL, born in Winnfield, (Winn Parish) LA. The spelling of her last name is evidently incorrect as there are no known KARNELLs living in Winn Parish during the early 1880s. Assuming these records to be credible, it is most likely that Shadric C. EMMONS married Sarah Ann FARNELL, who in the 1880 census for Winn Parish, LA was living in the household of her step-father, James R. SPILLERS. She was listed as age 17, which implies that she born about 1863, in agreement with the 1910 census for the wife of S. C. EMMONS. In the 1870 census for Winn Parish, Sarah was listed as age 9 and her sister Rosanna (who married Shadric C. EMMONS' half-brother, David C. MILLER) was listed as age 11. Sarah was not listed in the 1860 census for Winn Parish, but her sister Rosanna was listed as age 1. These records suggest that Sarah Ann FARNELL was born between 1861 and 1863. If she was two years younger than her sister, Rosanna, as implied by the 1870 census, then it is most likely that she was born about 1861.
