News-Star News Service

WINNFIELD -- A Hodge couple has been booked by Winn Parish Sheriff's officials in connection with the fatal shooting of a Winnfield man Sunday night.

Sheriff R. Sanford Jordan said today that William M. Matthews, 53, and his wife, Edith, 46, both of Hodge, were being held at the parish jail after Sam L. Dunn, 60 was shot to death shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to Jordan, Dunn was having trouble with his vehicle and hitched a ride toward Calvin in a pick-up truck. He apparently had an argument with the occupants of the truck and was shot with a 12-gauge shotgun. He was dead at the scene.

The sheriff said the shooting took place some four miles from U.S. 167 on the Calvin Road. Matthews was being held on an open murder charge and his wife was being held as a material witness, he added.

The body was taken to Southern Funeral Home here where funeral arrangements will be announced.
