Sandra A. Turner
Sandra (Sandy) A. Turner lost her courageous four-year battle to lung cancer on Nov. 29, 2007, surrounded by loved ones. She was born June 29, 1942, in Minden, La., to Mary Elizabeth Parker and James Edgar Kelly.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Edgar Kelly. She is survived by her mother, Mary Elizabeth Nichols of Spring, Texas; her stepmother, Ruth Kelly of Paris, Texas; two daughters, Leigh Ann Walker and husband Carl of Rogers, Mary Southern and husband Kevin of Bella Vista; one son, Chris Turner of Fayetteville; one sister, Linda Frohlich and husband Victor of Spring, Texas; one brother, Rick Kelly and wife Sheri of Baton Rouge, La.; and her beloved grandchildren, Audrey Walker, Rachel Walker, Cole Turner, Connor Southern, Olivia Clare Turner and Carson Southern. Survivors also include many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sandy graduated nursing school in 1964 from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. She spent her entire life taking care of others in some way or another. She retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville in 2004 with more than 20 years of service with many lifelong friends. She was a member of Mount Comfort Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, and she felt she was blessed to have such a loving church family.
Her passions include so many things such as bird watching, camping, fishing, and especially cooking for family and friends. Sandy was known for her talent and love for gardening, and her backyard was featured on the 2001 Garden Tour of Northwest Arkansas. She was a member of the Master Gardeners Association and of the Washington County Democratic Women. Sandy also loved the Fayetteville Public Library and Razorback sports.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dan Bradford and Highlands Oncology staff and Dr. Arnold Smith and the staff at NARTI for their compassion, love and excellent medical care during her illness. Other thanks to all of our friends and family for such unselfish support, love and prayers in the past four years.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Gutensohn Road, Springdale, Ark., at 10 a.m. on Saturday Dec. 8, 2007. Services are directed by Moore's Chapel of Fayetteville Arkansas with Bob I. Mayes officiating.
