Sara Lou Hudson Silk
A memorial service for Sara Lou Silk, who died on August 4, 2011, following a lengthy illness, will be held in the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes on Lamy Lane, Monroe, LA at 1:00 P.M., Friday, August 12, 2011. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until time of service.
Sara was born on September 13, 1937, the only child of John A. Hudson and Grace Porter Hudson. She is survived by her husband, Oland Silk; daughter Ellen Silk Hicks and her husband, Jeff Hicks, and son, Mike Silk. Sara grew up on North McGuire Street near the University, attended Georgia Tucker Elementary and Neville High School, where she was blessed with great teachers. The most influential person of her teenage years, however, was Miss Clara Freiberg, a renowned piano teacher of that period. A diminutive lady with boundless energy and an infectious smile, she brought out of Sara an artistry and understanding of theory that made her a more complete musician. Sara attended for a time Southwestern University in Lafayette, and the local college which is today ULM. During her life, Sara was the happy owner of Ferd Levi's Bookstore, and formed a partnership with Sharron Bonner and Rev. Don Woods to open Care Team, a Community Mental Health Center. Sara had a tremendous love of animals, music, children, and extended family members. Her talent for friendship was such that she drew people to her from all walks of life. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Owen Meyers, Ginny Meyers, and Kay Downey and the 6th floor medical staff of St. Francis Medical Center.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society Adoption Center of Monroe, P.O. Box 15311, Monroe, La. 71207-5311.
