Sarah Nettles Jordan

Dallas, TX

Sarah Winona Nettles Jordan, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Born the youngest of four sisters in Shubuta, Miss., on Jan. 25, 1923, her family moved to Jackson when she was nine years old. She graduated from Central High School in 1940.

The shy and beautiful Miss Nettles met an enthusiastic young preacher named Harold Jordan. After a four year courtship, the two married at First Baptist Church Jackson on Dec. 29, 1947. From that day on, Harold and Sarah devoted their lives to ministering to others. The couple was married for 49 years.

Harold, with Sarah by his side, served as pastor at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Madison Baptist Church, and Bowmar Avenue Baptist Church in Vicksburg. Harold founded Jackson Youth for Christ, and together the pair was dedicated to discipling young people. Additionally, Harold served as an industrial chaplain at Marathon-LeTourneau for 24 years.

A gentle and loving wife and mother, Sarah spent her time serving the Lord by meeting the needs of those around her. She warmly welcomed people into her home as she spent hours cooking meals, preparing bible studies, and sharing the love of Christ. She was known for hosting lovely celebrations as well as directing weddings. Sarah also enjoyed traveling to many foreign countries. She and Harold co-hosted more than a dozen trips to The Holy Land. Sarah and her daughter, Jan, loved their time together during several trips to Europe.

Sarah's greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a diligent student of the Word of God and a prayer warrior. For many years, she was devoted to teaching Sunday School and attending the Gulf Bible Conference where her husband was director. In her latter years, she returned to her hometown of Jackson and enjoyed attending the P.A.T.H. (Preaching and Teaching Helps) bible study there.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by her beloved daughter, Jan Jordan Rogers (Paul); her grandchildren Jordan Rogers (Rayne) and Ashley Rogers Dillon (Casey); her great-grandchildren Caroline and Dane Dillon; and her sister Ruth Allen and all those blessed to know her.

Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, July 18, from 5-7 pm at Sebrell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church of Madison.

Memorials may be made to World Vision or Prison Fellowship.
