SHERMAN WARD HAILES
May 4, 1921- October 4, 2013

GREENSBORO -- Sherman Ward “Pops” Hailes, also known as “The Chair Man”, passed away Friday night October 4, 2013 at the age of 92. Heis now resting peacefully in the arms of our Lord.

He is survived by his son, Robert R. Hailes and wife Susan, brother Robert R. Hailes and wife Hilda, sister Lila Whitehead, grandchildren Lori Mustachio and husband Phillip, Brent Hailes and wife Sarah, Jennifer Duke and husband Christopher, Vanessa Hailes, and great-grandchildren Collin Hailes, Phillip Sherman Mustachio, Jaxon, Camron, Caden and Jossalyn Duke.

He was predeceased by his wife Rosemary, parents Clarence “Greenwhiskers” Hailes and Dorothy, brothers Clarence Jr., Raymond, Griffin and Miles Hailes, sister Gladys Hailes, and his oldest son Sherman, Jr.

May our saddened hearts be healed in knowing the pain of his life is over and the beauty of his soul revealed. Pops fought the good fight. He stayed the course. He kept the faith. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving as a Merchant Marine before, during, and after the war. After being honorably discharged he was a Stevedore Superintendent at the Port of Houston in Texas. He lived his life to the fullest and enriched the lives of countless others. He made children's chairs in his backyard shed for a couple of dollars during his retirement years just to stay busy. Several hundred children from the High Point area now sit in chairs he hand made. Pops was filled with a zest for life that never grew old and kept him eternally young. It's said that a man never truly dies as long as memories of him are shared with others. If that's true, he will never be far away and will live forever in our hearts and cherished memories. There never was before or ever will be a character like him. He will surely be missed by all that ever met him. The world will be a dull and less interesting place without him.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Forbis and Dick-Guilford Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262.
