Rev. Sidney A. Rollinson
The Rev. Sidney Alton Rollinson, 89, of Summit, died Jan. 2, 2007, at his home after a period of declining health.
Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home of Gloster and Saturday from 1 p.m. till services at 2 at the funeral home. Chaplain Greg H. Beaty and Pastor David P. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Whittington Memorial Cemetery, north of Liberty.
Mr. Rollinson was born Dec. 12, 1917, in Liberty to Horace R. and Lula Foreman Rollinson. He was a retired ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene. As a young man, Rev. Rollinson worked in the shipyards of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi as a welder, building battleships during World War II.
As a minister, he served in Louisiana as a supply pastor for churches in the New Orleans area. In Mississippi, he pastored in the Delta region in central Mississippi and the Gloster Church of the Nazarene. He planted a church in Centreville and the New Salem Church of the Nazarene in rural Amite County, which is now New Salem Baptist Church.
During the latter years of ministry, Rev. Rollinson worked with the Centreville Police Department as an officer and dispatcher. He also served as chaplain of the nursing home in Centreville and spoke frequently on WPAE Christian radio station in Centreville. He also worked with Newman Funeral Home in Centreville and Brown Funeral Home in Gloster.
Rev. Rollinson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Etta Whittington Rollinson; and three brothers, Grady, Russell and Barney Rollinson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, S.V. and Naomi Rollinson of Portales, N.M., and Elvis Wayne and Donna Rollinson of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Buddy Boyd of Hilltop, Texas; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Four of his grandsons, John, James, Danny and Bo Boyd, will serve as pallbearers.
