Death Takes Steve Brogan

S. D. (Steve) Brogan, 71, 1839 Lindsey Avel, former Jones County sheriff, died in a local hospital Sunday night after a long illness.

Brogan became sheriff of Jones County in the spring of 1948, when he was elected to fill out the unexpired term of the late Luther Holder.

He was a retired member of the Laurel Police Department, and a veteran of World War I. He was the First Sergeant of the Laurel unit serving in the conflict.

During his 28 years in Laurel he became a member of Masonic Lodge No. 414, the order of Eastern Star and the American Legion, and was a member of the Second Avenue Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, 2 o'clock, from Memory Chapel. The Rev. Tom F. Fayburn, the Rev. J. W. Fagan and the Rev. Grover Laird will officiate.

Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery with Masonic rites at the graveside.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Hattie Brogan, Laurel; four daughters, Mrs. Curtiss Bradford, Mrs. Odell Parker, Mrs. John W. Johnson and Mrs. Bill Holifield, all of Laurel; two sons, Billy D. Brogan, Meridian; and Charles T. Brogan, Shreveport, La.; two brothers, Mike Brogan, Laurel; and Russell Brogan, Denver, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren.
