SHREVEPORT, LA - Graveside services for Dr. Stuart E. DeLee will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 23, 2000 at Forest park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue. Officiating will be Rev. Steve Caraway. A reception with the family will follow at 11 a.m. at Noel Memorial United Methodist Church, Herndon Avenue.
Dr. DeLee died Tuesday, March 21, 2000 after a lengthy illness. He was born February 3, 1919 to Ross A. DeLee and Lola Cornelia Jones DeLee. A lifelong resident of Shreveport, LA, he was a member of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church.
A graduate of Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans in 1942, he interned at Confederate Hospital. He attended Alexander Elementary School, graduated from C.E. Byrd High School and Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. Dr. DeLee entered the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corp and was stationed in Kobe, Japan. He was a Captain in the Medical Corp in the 318th General Hospital in the United States and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was also Commander of the 318th General Hospital in Osaka, Japan. Dr. DeLee was discharged in September 1946. He returned to Shreveport, LA to practice internal medicine with his brother, Dr. R. B. DeLee and in 1950 he went into private practice. Dr. Willis Butler appointed him as Deputy Coroner and later, he was elected Coroner and served until 1975. He always loved to tell people that for a week after the Sheriff died, he served as Coroner and Sheriff and Caddo Parish at the same time. A member of the Masonic Lodge, he was also a Shriner and a member of the Shreveport Medical Society.
Dr. DeLee was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dr. R. B. DeLee; niece, Richarda “Rickey” Marshall; and nephew, Doug DeLee.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha O'Neal DeLEe of Shreveport, LA; daughter, Rev. Cornelia DeLee of West Helena, AR; sons, John Stuart DeLee and his wife, Vicki Tarlton DeLee of San Antonio, TX and Thomas Michael DeLee and his wife, Susan Gleason DeLee of Texarkana, AR; grandchildren, Rebecca Koss Turecki of San Francisco, CA, Jonathan T. DeLee, Hudson DeLee and Kathryn DeLee, all of San Antonio, TX and Alexandra Michelle DeLee of Texarkana, AR; sister-in-law, Marjorie O'Neal Snider; nieces, Merrill Anne Walker and Claire DeLee Melton; cousin, Virginia Grambling McConathy; his office nurse, Dorothy Jordan; and his long-time fishing friend, Ike Cullick.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Shreveport Medical Society and the Men's Bible Class of Noel Memorial United Methodist Church.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Doris Anderson, Dianne Anderson, Alan Grismon, Kathy Howard and Deborah Turner for their loving care of their husband and father. They will be forever grateful to each of you.
