Thomas W. Pool, Jr.
ATHENS, GA -- Thomas Washington Pool Jr. passed away on August 28, 2007 at his home in Athens at the age of 81.
He was born in Macon County, GA, to the late Lucile Agnes Fountain and Thomas W. Pool, Sr. At the age of eight, following the death of his mother, he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Antoinette and Robert E. Aultman, of Reynolds.
Following graduation from Reynolds High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1949 with a BBA from the School of Business.
He worked many years for Ralston Purina Company before moving to Fitzgerald, GA, in 1969 as owner of Pool Chevrolet. He was active in the Fitzgerald Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.
Mr. Pool devoted many years to working with the Boy Scouts of America at the local level as well as at the Council level. He received the ``Silver Beaver'', the highest award given for volunteer service, from the Alapaha Area Council. He was proud to have both his sons attain the rank of Eagle Scout.
As a lifelong Methodist, he served in many capacities and positions of leadership in Reynolds Methodist, Central United Methodist, and Athens First United Methodist churches.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Beverly Barker Pool; son, Thomas Barker and Mary Beth Pool of Dalton, GA; son, Robert Daniel Pool of Atlanta; daughter, Lucille Deann and Ricky McDuffie of Tyrone, GA; grandchildren, Jackson Barker Pool, DeAnna Carolyn McDuffie, and Preston Eugene McDuffie; brother, Daniel Fountain Pool of Marietta, GA; sister, Sara Pool and Richard K. Young of Greenville, SC; several nieces and nephews.
Special appreciation is expressed to close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Caskin, members of the Cornerstone class, and the staff of United Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 11A.M. at Athens First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Britt officiating. Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 30, 2007 at 4:30P.M. in Hillcrest Cemetery, Reynolds, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America or the charity of choice.
