Funeral Service for Thurman Stewart Hanes age 91 of Tipton, Oklahoma will be at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the Tipton Church of Christ with Mike Suiter and Rodger Schwenn officiating. Burial will follow in the Tipton Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick. Mr. Hanes passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Comanche County Memorial Hospital in Lawton.

Thurman Stewart Hanes was born July 13, 1917, at Manitou, Oklahoma, to Claude Clarence and Susie Evelyn (Ayers) Hanes. He attended Laing School, graduating from Laing High School in 1934. He later attended Abilene Christian College, Abilene, Texas. On August 17, 1940, he and Bernice Elizabeth Waldroop were united in marriage at Vernon, Texas. He farmed all his life in the Laing Community, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Tipton Church of Christ where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher and song leader for many years. He served as former mayor of Tipton, a former member of the Tipton Chamber of Commerce, Farmers Co-op Board and the Board of Director of the First National Bank, Tipton Branch.

He is survived by his wife: Bernice of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law: Gayle and Bruce Hoover of Frederick, Oklahoma, Valerie and Max Hampton of Newport Beach, California, Susan and Tom Way of Lawton, Oklahoma and Julia and Chris Henderson of Ponca City, Oklahoma; two sisters and brother-in-law: Reba Sturgess of Tipton, Oklahoma and Evelyn and Gene Larkins of Whittier, California; nine grandchildren and spouses: Holly and Steven Fite, Kandy Hoover, Robin Hoover, Wade and Cassie Hampton, Beth and Jeff Hamilton, Cody and Tricia Way, Heather and Guy Gillespie, Stewart Henderson and Christin Henderson; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Dean, Carroll and C.C. Hanes; and one sister: Mopaul Staggs.
