Velma Stuart Butler Cowart
August 26, 1922 - October 18, 2016

Funeral services for Velma Stuart Butler Cowart, 94, of Lufkin will be held Friday, October 21, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Stephen Willis officiating. Interment will follow in the Zavalla Cemetery.

Mrs. Cowart was born August 26, 1922 in Huntington, Texas to the late Alpha Bell (Beathard) and Richard Lee Stuart, and died Tuesday, October 18, 2016 in a Galveston hospital.

Mrs. Cowart was a lifetime resident of Lufkin. She was a cashier at Brookshire Brothers for 18 years. Mrs. Cowart enjoyed gardening and she loved her church, Fuller Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sister, Jo Ann Pate of Dickinson; niece, Sharron Allen of Huntington; nephews, David Pate of Angleton, Michael Pate of Clute, and Steven Pate of Dickinson; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband of more than 50 years, Carl Butler; second husband, Medford Cowart; and brother, Jessie Stuart.

Pallbearers will be David Pate, Mike Pate, Steven Pate, Robert Telford, Bryan Anglin, and Rusty Jordan.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon prior to the services.
