Vera Taylor
July 3, 1928 - November 10, 2014

Vera Frances Whittington Taylor passed away on November 10, 2014 at Harmony House West, a private care residence in Tyler, Texas. Services will be held at the Stringer Funeral Home in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 14 and the funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, followed by internment at Crystal Springs City Cemetery.

Vera was born on July 3, 1928 in Crystal Springs, Mississippi and was the daughter of Ernest and Lola Maude Whittington. She married Calvin Taylor on December 14, 1946 upon his return from the Pacific after World War II. For the next 50 years she worked diligently to create a warm and loving home for her family. She was a devoted wife, committed mother and grandmother, a caring daughter and sister, a good friend and a dedicated Christian.

During her fifty years of marriage, she lived in Mississippi, Texas and finally in New Orleans, Louisiana where her four children were raised. Besides running a pristine home, she loved to cook, sew, read, visit friends and family, travel, and serve at church as she could. In 1981, Calvin and Vera retired back to Mississippi and settled on family property “out in the country.” This was the new home that welcomed children and grandchildren for many years of love, holiday joy, and summer “fun in the creek!” In 1997, Vera lost her beloved, Calvin, and in 2003 suffered health issues of her own necessitating a move to Texas to be near a daughter. From that time until her passing, she was assisted in her day-to-day living by many heroes. But no matter how her health failed, she never lost her smile. That was her gift to us until the end.

Vera joins her parents, her husband, Calvin, her son, Calvin Jr., her grandson, Jonathan Davis, and her brother, Jim Whittington, in Eternity. She is survived by her daughters: Kaye Kraus (husband, Larry Kraus) of Tyler, Texas, Nancy Latuso of Jefferson, LA, and, Pamela O'Rourke of Jefferson, LA; her grandchildren: Joshua Davis, Jeremy Taylor, Danielle Taylor, Lloyd Kraus, and Dominick Latuso; and, nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers: Bob Whittington of Madison, Mississipi and John Ronald Whittington of Florence, Mississippi; and her sisters: Shirley Izard Deaton of Hazlehurst, Mississippi and Martha Bates of Harrisville, Mississippi; and, numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank: Highland Baptist Church for its commitment of caring for Vera throughout her years in Mississippi and Texas; First Christian Church in Tyler, Texas, especially the women's groups that took her under their wing when she moved there in 2003; and, to Carol Truskosky and her staff at Harmony House, West in Tyler, TX for their commitment to her physical, emotional and spiritual well-being during her decline.

Memorials may be made to: Highland Baptist Church, 505 North Jackson St., Crystal Springs, MS 39059 or to First Christian Church, 4202 S. Broadway, Tyler, TX 75701.
