Verne ``Red'' Smith

Funeral services for Verne ``Red'' Smith, 95, of Start will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 5, 2008 at the Crew Lake United Methodist Church, Start with Rev. Billy Brumfield and Rev. Brian Canuteson officiating. Interment will follow in the Start Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home in Rayville.

Verne ``Red'' Smith was born on October 14, 1912 and passed away on Friday, January 4, 2008 after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Smith was a member of Crew Lake United Methodist Church since 1950. He was an Army veteran of WWII, where he received a Purple Heart. He was a pharmacist with Milam Drug in Tullos in his earlier years and farmed from 1950 until his death. Red loved fishing and hunting but was an avid trapper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Smith; parents, Joel and Lula Smith; granddaughter, Angie Sanson and great grandchild, Morgan Nicole Magoun.

Survivors include his Daughter, Linda Wilson and husband, Ernest of Start; Sons, Jerry L. Smith and wife, Beanie of Vicksburg, MS and Terry Joel Smith and wife, Beverly of Jonesville, LA; 8-Grandchildren; 17-Great Grandchildren and 6-Great-Great Grandchildren; brother, Harold G. Smith of Mandeville, LA.

Pallbearers will be Billy Whitten, David Ray Davis, Andrew Cole, Walter Garner, Bentley Curry, and Aubrey Watts

Visitation will be 1:00 PM until Service Time, at 2:00 PM, Saturday at the Crew Lake United Methodist Church in Start.
