HORNBECK MAN SUCCUMBS TO STAB WOUNDS

Vernon Savelle, 25, Pipe Line Worker, Was Injured Two Weeks Ago

Vernon Savelle, 25-year-old pipe line worker of Hornbeck, La., 16 miles north of Leesville, died at 2 a.m. Sunday in Charity hospital here, the victim of a stabbing Sunday night, January 12, on the doorsteps of a Hornbeck church. Several blood transfusions last week were of little avail.

Atlas Brown of Hornbeck, who allegedly started the attack on Savelle, probably will be charged with murder this morning at Leesville, parish seat, Deputy Sheriff Hoffpauir of Vernon parish told The Times by telephone Sunday night. Brown has successfully eluded capture but the search for him will be intensified today, the deputy said.

Howard Brown, brother of Atlas, was first believed to have been implicated in the fight, but Vernon officers Sunday night said his arrest has not been ordered.

Admitted to the hospital here on January 19, Savelle was suffering from a punctured left lung, a severed rib and deep knife wounds across the leg, hip and back. He was not able to suggest a motive for the attack upon him.

His body, in charge of McCook Brothers Funeral home, will be sent overland at 10 a.m. today to Florien, La., for funeral services and interment. The Rev. P. A. Chance will officiate.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Savelle of Bronson, Texas, five brothers and two sisters.
